Schabin

Schabin Leaf is valued by artists and decorative finishers for its expressive, fragmented appearance and versatility, making it an excellent choice for textured, abstract, and contemporary metallic finishes. Composed of irregular flakes and sheets rather than uniform squares, Schabin creates dynamic surfaces with depth, movement, and a layered visual effect.

Schabin is available in two primary formats: small flakes measuring approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch (commonly referred to as Chinese Schabin), and larger irregular sheets ranging from approximately 4 inches to 6 inches (Italian Schabin). These variations allow for different aesthetic outcomes, from finely textured surfaces to bold, highly expressive compositions. Schabin is typically packaged in large boxes or jars for easy handling and application.

Available in multiple metal compositions, including Color #2-1/2 Schlagmetal (gold tone), Copper, and Aluminum, Schabin offers a wide range of metallic finishes to suit different design needs. Each material provides its own unique visual character, from warm gold hues to cool silvers and rich copper tones.

Aluminum Schabin is lighter in weight than Composition Gold (Schlagmetal), meaning that a 1-kilogram package will contain a greater volume and more individual pieces compared to Composition Schabin. This makes Aluminum Schabin especially useful for projects requiring broader coverage or lighter-toned metallic finishes.

Schabin Leaf is intended for interior use only. Due to the composition of most variants and their susceptibility to environmental exposure, it is not recommended for exterior applications.

Schabin Leaf is ideal for:

• Textural and abstract wall finishes

• Decorative panels and feature walls

• Furniture and interior accents

• Mixed-media artwork

• Contemporary and artistic gilding applications

Schabin is typically applied by hand, allowing the artist to layer, overlap, and arrange pieces freely to achieve a custom, organic composition. Because of its irregular form, it is especially well suited for creative, non-uniform designs rather than precise or traditional gilding work.

Depending on the metal composition, Schabin will tarnish over time, particularly in the case of Composition Gold (Schlagmetal) and Copper, and should be sealed with an appropriate topcoat if preservation of the original color is desired. Aluminum Schabin, however, will not tarnish, making it a more stable option where long-term color retention is important.

Proper handling with clean, dry tools and storage in a stable, dry environment will help maintain the quality of the material prior to use. When applied thoughtfully, Schabin Leaf offers a bold, highly textured metallic finish that brings movement, depth, and artistic flexibility to a wide range of interior decorative and fine art applications.
